Training Camp Feast or Famine

Anyone who knows me personally knows today is my birthday. Good, great, grand, wonderful (no yelling on the bus!).

Taking a step back and looking at what’s going on today was a necessary step to a successful birthday.

I couldn’t help but think about the NFL (yes, I’m a nerd, I know). I am told daily to think about other things, care about more important items going on in the world, and that football is just a game. Well guess what? It’s more than a game to me, and like so many of you reading this, it’s an integral part of my lifestyle. We live, breath, and die for this city. There is no better way to feel the passion of our hometown than through the ultimate competition of the NFL.

While I turn 23 on this glorious day, and probably will enjoy a few pops with the friends (that might trickle into weekend), my NFL brethren are grinding their life away trying to make a pro football team.

On this day of birth and rejoicing, I can’t help but to think about the Domonic Cooks (from UB) of this earth. A guy who got hurt trying to give it his all and to perform for our entertainment. While we sell insurance, work retail, or continue to study at college, there are people out there skilled enough to have a paid invitation to attend camp at St. John Fisher College in suburban Rochester, NY.  In my opinion, this is one of the most prestigious invitations in the United States . Can you imagine being good enough (I know a lot of people play football out there) to make a career out of the NFL? That’s amazing, even if the average length of a NFL career is only 3 years.

As well all mock up our projected 53 man Bills rosters, keep in mind that camp is a profession to these players. That dreams are both made and shattered here. That these guys will do whatever it takes to be given a shot to play on Sundays. Remember, these guys put their lives on hold, and moved to foreign cities for this unique shot of a lifetime that only comes once, and to certain individuals.

While you enjoy your weekend with your family, go out with friends, or just enjoy some good ole’ fashioned “me” time, take a moment to think about what some people my age are doing this summer. Given a shot out of school, to perform on the greatest stage of all. The most popular entertainment industry in the world (outside of porn), and they are doing whatever it takes to impress us as fans.
