Schefter: Evans Trade Imminent
**UPDATE** Lee Evans deal expected within 48 Hours, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
A tweet from from WGR’s Joe Busacglia has raises suspicion concerning the rumored Lee Evans trade talks. Buscaglia tweeted:
Buddy Nix declines to comment about Lee Evans. “What you want to talk about, Lee? I don’t know anything. When I do, I’ll tell you.” #Bills
Buscaglia’s quote comes from a more blunt than usual Buddy Nix. Buddy usually gives generic politically correct statements about a “chance to improve the football team” when discussing trades. In the tweet, Buddy appears to make a point of taking the 5th amendment, and being extra cautious he doesn’t divulge anything. Whether or not a deal comes out of this remains to seen, but Buddy at least appears to be listening to offers.
On a related note, Jamison Hensley from the Baltimore Sun reports that while, in addition to Arizona, Baltimore is interested in Lee Evans, that interest is limited to scenarios where Evans is released. With other suitors and a scarce WR market, they may not have that option. The more patient Nix is, the higher the cost for another team looking to add a legitimate receiving weapon. If he pulls that off, dare I say the move would be Belichick-esque? The old scout may be more shrewd than any of us think.
Recognizing this trade as a move that would benefit the team is easy when you look at the 3 games the Bills played without Evans last year. In those games after Evans was put on IR, Steve Johnson had at least 5 catches and 55 yards in each game and players like Namaan Roosevelt (who has developed quite the rapport with Fitzpatrick in camp thus far) have stepped up and played well. This stretch included tough defenses such as New England and the New York Jets, so it seems that Buffalo would have reason for believing it’s younger, lower cost talent should be able to produce without Evans.
