Alex Smith Likely Headed to Kansas City (not Buffalo)
It looks like Alex Smith is headed to Kansas City, so at this point its looking unlikely that well see the quarterback in a Bills uniform. According to Ian Rapparport of the NFLN, a deal is “all but done.” It’s important to remember that reporting has been notoriously bad about these things so we could wake up tomorrow seeing Buddy mugging next to Alex Smith, but it’s unlikely at this point.
Can’t say I’m disappointed. Smith was a guy who initially seemed interesting due in large part to his playoff performance two seasons ago knocking off the Saints, and a guy who almost led the NFL in passer rating before getting unceremoniously benched for Colin Kaepernick.
However, after going back and watching some of his games, it was clear that Jim Harbaugh and Greg Roman went out of their way to limit the risk of Smith making bad decisions. Very rarely was Smith asked to make a challenging throw, and the Bills offense will certainly ask whoever the signal caller is to do exactly that.
Finally, there was the issue of compensation. The Bills already have over 10 million in cap space tied up with Ryan Fitzpatrick that it doesn’t look like they will get out from underneath. If the Bills were to bring Smith aboard, that would mean the Bills would be paying over 25 million dollars for the NFC West Late 00s Alumni QB club. No thanks.
