Who Can Stop Stevie?

We’ve all known Stevie Johnson as one of the more vocal (maybe sometimes too vocal) and confident players on this team for years now. And after recording his third consecutive season of at least 1,000 yards receiving, Johnson continues to back his talk up with his performance.

The Bills receiver was back at it again Monday. After practice Johnson laid out a hefty statement about his team’s opponent this weekend.

“I don’t think they have anybody to stop me, for real,” Johnson said, according to Buffalo News. “I think we have guys in the receiver room that are as good as I am, if not better. I just have that confidence in my teammates and in myself.”

Johnson also went on to say that he believed that this receiving corps was the best group that he’s “ever been apart of.”

Now, those are some hefty words coming from Johnson, considering Buffalo has only beaten New England twice in the last decade. However, this isn’t the first time Johnson has recently spoken confidently about his and its position in the division heading into the regular season.

“I can feel that shift happening in our division,” said Johnson when I interviewed him in July. “Enough of the old B.S. man. We have no reason to have a losing season from here on out.”

Even though Johnson’s success hasn’t panned out to success for the Bills, he still has a right to talk confidently because he is going to take it to every opposing cornerback that lines up against him every week. It doesn’t matter whether it’s Darrelle Revis or Aqib Talib, SJ13 can hang with the best of them.

Johnson is arguably the only resident on Revis Island after continuous success against the former Jets corner; 19 receptions for 262 yards and two touchdowns in 2010 and 2011. Stevie may not be Megatron, but he is shifty enough to beat any defender off the line of scrimmage every week.

As a teammate of Johnson, these are the words you want to hear come out of the veteran’s mouth. Confidence can do a team wonders. Especially for a player in the same position group. With a young group of receivers accompanying Stevie, it’s important for the young guns to hear confidence come from their leader, especially about playing a division foe like the Patriots.

You know Johnson is going to lay it on the line every week, whether he’s 100% or 70%. He’ll be there to back his guys up. That’s what you love about this guy.

“I love playing football and playing with brothers is even more thrilling for me,” said the wideout. “I can speak for a lot of the guys on the team but me personally I give my all to the fans, my teammates, coaches and the people of Buffalo. It’s not good 100% of the time but I’ll never give up on them as long as I’m in a Bills uniform, and as long as I can move and beat a defense, no matter how I feel; I’ll be suiting up on Sunday.”

Johnson’s confidence is just one reason why I believe the Bills will upset New England on Sunday.
